Usually, once a person has installed a solar panel and has it running smoothly, they tend to forget about maintaining it. However, if you do not keep the solar panel clean, then it’s performance will suffer greatly. The panels are made to capture the suns rays and convert them into energy that we can use, so if anything is blocking or hindering the panel’s ability to capture sunlight, then that is going to have an effect on the efficiency of your solar panel. So if you want to get the most out of your solar panels, you are going to need to make sure they are cleaned routinely.
Solar panels become dirty because they are usually mounted on top of the roof of the house, where there are many outdoor pollens, and other things like leaves and dust, that can obstruct the solar cells. Dirt is commonly carried off of the ground by the wind and onto the roof, and if there are any surrounding trees, you will have to be careful as to not let leaves build up on the solar panels. You also have to make sure you don’t let too much water build up on the surface of the panels, as this will also obstruct the cells ability to capture sunlight. There are many things that could make your solar panels dirty, including bugs and bird droppings as well.
There are several options when it comes to cleaning your solar panels. The first option, and the most obvious, would be for you to get dirty and do it yourself. However, most people are not willing or able to do such a thing, so there are also cleaning services that you can hire to come and clean your panels on a regular basis. There are also automated cleaning systems that can be programmed to do the job for you routinely. The way in which you clean your solar panel, really depends on how big of a budget you are on and/or how much you are willing to work.
If you would like to learn how to build a solar panel yourself, then I would recommend the Power4Home guide. It is packed with instructions, diagrams and even 3+ hours of instructional video.
